Problem solving plays an important role as a building element of severalcognitive tests, e.g. as a measuring device for intelligence. Since many resources are necessary to construct and evaluate these tests, it could be helpful to be able to use the large samples of multiple choice competitions in mathematics. In this project, non-parametric discriminant analysis is applied to results of multiple choice competitions in mathematical problem solving to single out characteristic features of the solutions of those with outstanding test results. It is discussed what kind of information these tests can provide and which problem questions emerge in the factor analysis applied to concrete samples.
