MDMQ questionnaire (English version of MDBF)

The MDMQ is an English version of the Multidimensional Mood State Questionnaire. The original version is in German and has been published by Hogrefe Publishers: Steyer, R., Schwenkmezger, P., Notz, P. und Eid, M. (1997). Der Mehrdimensionale Befindlichkeitsfragebogen (MDBF). Göttingen: Hogrefe.

The PDF document below contains the items, the dimension measured by the item, and the coding directions (+ and -). The coding scheme is simply to invert the negative items (1 to 6, 2 to 5, 3 to 4, 4 to 3, 5 to 2 and 6 to 1) and then take the sum of all items of the same scale: good-bad, awake-tired, calm-nervous.

As opposed to the German version with 5 answer categories, the English version has 6 answer categories which are also labelled. With this new version we aimed at having less skewed distributions as in the original form. For short versions you can just take one side of the form, left or right (see the PDF document). The short forms (left and right side) are balanced with 4 items (2 positive and 2 negative ones) of each of the three scales in each short version.

Items 13 to 15 and 28 to 30 are optional. They are extreme items that may help to differentiate between persons at very high levels with respect to the corresponding scale.

Unfortunately, there are no publications about the English version. We used it once successfully in a study on the effects of odors (parfums) on mood states. This was for a big company, but was not published. If you use this questionnaire, please cite the German version and this home page. And please send a short note to rolf.steyer [ at ]
